For UAE ecommerce brands, selling online comes with two features that change how margin should be measured. A registered business adds 5% VAT to its sales, and a store that offers cash on delivery only receives the money if the customer accepts the parcel. Neither shows up clearly in a revenue figure, and a refused delivery can wipe out the profit of several good orders (Source: UAE Federal Tax Authority).
This article sets out the VAT facts, works through the cost of refused cash on delivery orders, and explains the Founding 10,000: a year of ORVX Core at no cost for eligible Shopify stores, including stores in the UAE.
Every example and amount on this page is illustrative. It shows the method and is not a benchmark, a quote or advice.
UAE ecommerce VAT: the numbers that matter
VAT was introduced across the UAE on 1 January 2018 at a standard rate of 5%. Registration is mandatory above AED 375,000 and voluntary above AED 187,500, according to the Ministry of Finance (Source: UAE Ministry of Finance).
For a registered store with VAT-inclusive prices, the VAT inside a price is one twenty-first of it, because a 5% addition on the net price gives 21 parts out of which 1 is VAT. The rest is revenue. Recording the full price as revenue overstates it by 5%.
Worked example: what a refused cash on delivery order costs
As an illustration only, suppose a registered store sells a product at AED 210 including VAT. The VAT is AED 210 / 21 = AED 10, so net revenue is AED 200. Assume the product costs AED 70, the courier charges AED 18 for delivery and a further AED 7 to collect cash, and the ad cost to win the order is AED 35.
| Line | Delivered and paid | Refused at the door |
|---|---|---|
| Net revenue | AED 200 | AED 0 |
| Product cost | -AED 70 | AED 0 (back in stock) |
| Outbound delivery | -AED 18 | -AED 18 |
| Cash collection fee | -AED 7 | AED 0 |
| Return to warehouse | AED 0 | -AED 12 |
| Ad cost per order | -AED 35 | -AED 35 |
| Profit per order | AED 70 | -AED 65 |
In this example a delivered order makes AED 70 and a refused one loses AED 65, assuming the item comes back undamaged and the return leg costs AED 12. If one in five cash on delivery orders is refused, a 20% refusal rate, the expected profit per order dispatched is 0.8 x 70 + 0.2 x (-65) = 56 - 13 = AED 43. That is almost 40% less than the AED 70 a delivered-order report shows.
The lesson is not that cash on delivery is wrong. It is that refusals need to be counted per order, by product and by channel, so that a campaign full of refused orders is not mistaken for a successful one. When you look at acquisition cost, divide ad spend by customers who actually paid. The CAC Calculator does that arithmetic.
Prepaid and cash on delivery side by side
A useful exercise is to split one month of orders into prepaid and cash on delivery, and compare profit per dispatched order for each group, refusals included. The comparison tells you what cash on delivery really costs your store, which is a better basis for decisions such as a small fee for the option, a minimum basket, or a confirmation call before dispatch than a general rule of thumb.
What UAE stores should check
- Report revenue net of VAT, and only for orders that were delivered and paid.
- Track refused and returned deliveries as their own line, with the courier costs they carry.
- Compare refusal rates by product and by ad campaign, to see whether some of them lose far more orders at the door.
- Watch your rolling turnover against the registration thresholds if you are not registered yet.
- Make product pages clear in both English and Arabic. The AI Product Description Generator drafts copy in either language from your product facts, and the Shopify Store Health Checker reviews the storefront's setup, policies and contact details.
VAT treatment has exceptions for specific goods and situations. The Federal Tax Authority's guidance and your tax agent are the authority for your own business.
The Founding 10,000, explained
Counting refused deliveries as their own cost line is the kind of view ORVX Core gives a store from its own data. With the Founding 10,000, ORVX's USD 1.9M Commerce Initiative, an eligible Shopify store can use Core for 12 months for free, with no payment card required. There are 10,000 places worldwide in one list, filled in the order stores activate, and UAE ecommerce brands join that same list.
The $1.9M is not a pot of money. It is 10,000 stores x $190 standard annual Core price = $1,900,000: the value of all the free subscriptions if they were bought at standard price. It is not cash, funding, a grant or revenue, and no one is paid anything.
When the 12 months finish, Core continues only if you agree to the standard $19 per month or $190 per year, charged in US dollars. Intelligence is a separate plan at $39 per month or $390 per year and is not covered. No government entity takes part, and Shopify does not fund the initiative.
What Core includes
- Profit, order by order: sales, product costs, gross profit and margin, expenses and net profit, also by product and collection.
- The store's records: orders, products, refunds and fulfilment from Shopify, kept current.
- Reporting over any dates, in dirhams and Gulf time if those are your store's settings, in English or Arabic.
- Customer value: who bought what, and how much each customer is worth.
- Stock value: units on hand and the cash they hold.
- Advertising cost from Meta and Google inside net profit, with MER and AOV.
- Safe connections and alerts: read-only access, and a flag when a figure needs a second look.
The Intelligence plan covers Ask ORVX, NOVA's recommendations and forecasting; Core does not. VAT filing is not part of ORVX at all.
How to claim
- Add ORVX to your Shopify store from the Shopify App Store, or link your store to an account on orvx.ai.
- The store is checked for eligibility: trading live, never allocated a place before, and places still open. Test and development stores cannot take part, and a paid ORVX subscription is not altered.
- Switch Core on. That day is day one of your year, the app displays the closing date, and you are reminded 30, 7 and 1 days ahead. No payment is taken at the end without your approval.
For the complete terms and the number of places still available, see the Founding 10,000 page. Other plans are on the pricing page.
